Hunter Dies Following Fall From Tree Stand
Posted: November 5, 2007
ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles man who died Saturday after falling from a tree stand has been identified as 41-year-old Scott Ferris.
Ferris was in the process of climbing into the tree stand when the apparatus fell beneath him. He was wearing a safety harness and was suspended above the ground. The harness was the type that straps only across the chest rather than fitting the entire body.
Attempts to resuscitate Ferris were unsuccessful and the Madison County Medical Examiner pronounced him dead at the scene. The cause of death is believed to have been from suffocation.

Hunter Dies Following Fall From Tree Stand
Posted: November 3, 2007
ST. CHARLES - A man planning to hunt deer was killed after falling from a tree stand Saturday afternoon in Madison County west of St. Charles.
The man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of relatives, was in the process of climbing into the tree stand when the apparatus fell beneath him. He was wearing a safety harness and was suspended above the ground. The harness was the type that straps only across the chest rather than fitting the entire body.
A neighbor heard his cries for help and upon finding him, returned home to get a ladder. When he returned, the hunter was unresponsive.
Attempts to resuscitate the hunter were unsuccessful and the Madison County Medical Examiner pronounced him dead at the scene. The cause of death is believed to have been from suffocation.
The DNR is continuing to investigate the incident. _________________ ---------------------------

Prayers for the family.....
Folks this is one of those "easy to avoid" accidents. You would almost be better of falling to the ground verses getting hung up in the tree with that type of "safety strap" that just wraps around your chest.
ANY harness you use should MUST support you from your legs and waste. If it includes a chest strap inaddition to the seat harness, great!
The problem with any of these harness systems and safety set-ups is that should you loose your treestand out from under you like Mr Ferris did, what do you do at that point? How do you get down?
It is VERY difficult.
That's why a good quality seat harness is a must. IF you get stuck up there it could be a while with your FULL body weight bearing down in the harness area.
In a harness like Mr. Ferris was wearing I doubt you could last 20 minutes with your full body weight bearing down on your chest.
I know of a guy that was left hanging with just the top part of the climber and his safety harness attached to the tree, he cut himself loose thinking he could bear hug the tree and climb down like that. As soon as he got the strap cut, he slid down 10' or so of tree in about .5 seconds. Skinned raw from shins to cheek and ear. _________________ ---------------------------
