Here is what I can tell you. I received a similar e-mail a month or so ago. The e-mail is fairly accurate but I think misleading.

Tennessee bear bowhunting is being threatened BUT, NOT by Mike Strandlund.

Mike Strandlund wrote an article in January called "Bear Bowhunting Threatened by Ban"

It can be found on-line here

www.bowhuntingworld.com/ArticleContent.aspx?id=523

Essentially what has happened is that hound hunters aren't happy that the TWRA started a bow season. So those hunters petitioned their county Commissioners to close archery bear hunting. Well, county commissioners can't do that, basically only the TWRA can set those rules/regulations.

However, the state legislature can and has over ridden the TWRA. A perfect example of this is the albino deer law enacted a few years ago that protects a genetically inferior animal because they are "rare". What the legislature never considered or admits is that they are rare because they are inferior, they have no camouflage and are often more susceptible to disease.

Anyways, back to the bears. Now that the commissioners have approved the bowhunting ban, they are passing it along to the state legislature to try to push it through as law. If it's passed it will be VERY hard to rescind.

The bill can be seen here

This is a perfect example of why there will not be any hunting in the U.S. in next 10 years. Not only do we have wackjobs like PETA and HSUS trying to shut down hunting, we shut sown hunting ourselves.

In fact I think we do a better job at it than PETA of chopping the legs out from under of fellow hunters. Why? Because "my way" is the best way to hunt all other are unethical. At least that is what we keep telling our selves. We have hunters fighting hunters over doves. Hunters fighting hunters over high fences. Hunters fighting hunters over cross bows. Hunters fighting hunters over archery bear hunts.

Who has time to fight PETA when were busy pulling knives out of our backs?

This sucks!

Is there anything we can do to try and stop this? Will it affect all of Tennessee or just Unicoi county? What about Cherokee?

Phil you can contact your state rep. I suggest calling AND e-mailing.

I found this last night

http://www.capitol.tn.gov/Bills/106/Fiscal/HB2119.pdf

It says:

[i]"Decrease State Expenditures

You can copy and paste this into e-mails to the reps or write something yourself. Be polite and professional PLEASE.

You don't have to be from Tennessee to help. Lots of people come here from out of state to hunt. Your state or your preferred game animal could be next!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Dear Sirs,

I am writing to encourage you to oppose HB2119. Archery has been an humane and effective method for harvesting bears for thousands of years and Unicoi County is not an exception to that rule.

In addition I would like to point out that while the bill states that "Not a Significant Decrease State Expenditures", passing this bill will result in a decrease in bear hunting related tourism for the county and the state of Tennessee. Bear hunters coming to Tennessee spend a significant amount of money on license sales, hotels, food, gas and hunting related supplies. As a county and state, we can NOT afford to legislate ourselves out of any more business. Particularly in these economic times.

Thank You,
