Grandfather Fatally Shoots Grandson in Deer Hunting Accident
Monday, November 19, 2007

TOWN OF SAXEVILLE, Wisconsin — A grandfather fatally shot his 18-year-old grandson in northwestern Waushara County during the opening weekend of Wisconsin's nine-day gun deer-hunting season, a warden says.

David R. Ruck from the Saxeville area died at a Neenah hospital after he was shot Sunday morning, Sheriff David R. Peterson said.

"My heart goes out to the family and to the community," said Tim Lawhern, conservation warden and state director of the Hunter Education Administration.

Deputies responded to a report about 8:40 a.m. that a hunter had been shot on private property in the town of Saxeville.

Ruck had been shot in the upper leg and inner groin, Peterson said, adding that the shooter said he mistook Ruck for a deer.

The sheriff's department and state Department of Natural Resources were investigating.

The gun deer season opened Saturday, with an estimated 630,000 hunters participating.

No statewide deer kill figures were reported Sunday.

Montcalm County - A Montcalm County man died over the weekend after being shot by his son in a hunting accident.

Michael Myers, 48, was hunting with his son in Home Township on North Vickeryville Road when the accident took place.

According to police, the son, 24, had shot a deer and was looking for it when the father came through the brush and startled him. He was shot in the leg. The shot severed a femoral artery.

Myers was taken to Gratiot Community Hospital and then to St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw where he died early Sunday morning.

Police are still investigating and the report will be sent onto the prosecutor for review.

MORGANTON – A 13-year-old boy has died following an accidental shooting that occurred during a hunting trip to mark the sixth-grader's birthday.

William Andrews Reynolds was fatally wounded when a .410-guage shotgun slipped from his grip and went off. He was taken to a hospital Saturday but died that night.

William's mother, Lucy Huffman Reynolds, says she wanted her son to wait until his 13th birthday so he was old enough to abide by hunting safety rules.

She says he shot a squirrel earlier this month in Burke County but wanted to get a larger one, so she let him go hunting with her friend.

His mother says she was told William was driving a golf cart. When it hit a bump, he let go of the gun to grab the wheel but the gun slipped, hit the back of the cart and went off.

First Full Weekend of Big Game Hunting Gets Off to a Sad Start

Posted: Nov 19, 2007 12:12 PM CST

New York's deer hunting season is only a couple days old, and already there is a fatal accident to report.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office says 76-year-old Donald Frye of Caroga Lake was shot while hunting deer in the Town of Minden. Authorities say several members of his family were with him at the time. Frye was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It is not clear who shot him. Police say they are still investigating the shooting, but are looking at it as an accident, right now.

South Haven hunter dies in fall from tree

PORTER COUNTY | A Porter County man died Sunday while deer hunting in rural Liberty Township, which is north of Valparaiso. Officials believe the man fell out of a tree stand.

Indiana conservation officers are calling the death an accident.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, when Allen Loftis, 48, of South Haven failed to return home from deer hunting Sunday evening a family member went to the area where Loftis hunted and found him at the foot of the tree that his 20 foot high treestand was in.

The firearm Loftis was using was still hanging in the tree, which indicated to authorities that Loftis apparently fell from the tree.

That would be consistent with the autopsy findings that showed Loftis died from blunt force trauma resulting from a fall from that height.
