17 HMR

Postby 41mag » Tue Jun 24, 2008 1:52 pm

I bought my son a Savage 17 HMR for his birthday and "played" with it a bit the other day. Nice gun and pretty accurate but I still prefer my 22 mag for myself. I have a Marlin 783 that is 26 years old and it will drive nails with Winchester 34 grain high speed loads. It will group well under a inch at 100 yards if you do your part and that 17 has no edge there. My son had wanted a 17 HMR for a few years so I "surprised" him with one. I have no plans to retire my 22 mag for one as it has proven to be very effective on coyotes and smaller varmints and I would question a 17 HMR on larger varmints as bullet simply does not have the mass behind it.
