CrossFit three-peat for Cookeville's Froning

CARSON, Calif. — It’s a three-peat for Rich Froning.

The Cookeville native — who won the 2011 and 2012 CrossFit Games — ran away with the final day of action at the Home Depot Center, pulling away to be crowned “Fittest on Earth” in the event that aims to find the most well-rounded athlete by providing an array of challenges.

After getting a close challenge from Jason Khalipa for the majority of the Games, Froning won all of Sunday’s events, including the “Sprint Chipper,” “The Cinco 1” and “The Cinco 2.”

Froning finished with (962) points, pulling away from Khalipa (890). Sam Briggs won the women’s event. Both champions win $275,000 in addition to prize money for placing in individual events.

When asked about winning every event Sunday to secure the victory, Froning joked, “Yeah, all according to plan.”

Showing its varied nature as always, the Games’ “Sprint Chipper” included sit-ups, snatches and wall burpee. During “The Cinco” — a two-part challenge that was scored separately, participants had to perform three rounds of heavy deadlifts and five weighted one-legged squats before going on an 80-foot handstand walk. Soon after in the second part of the event, they did three rounds of muscle-ups and five deficit handstand push-ups before wrapping up with 90 feet of walking lunges while holding a 165-pound bar overhead.

The individual men’s event, which began Wednesday, also featured a plethora of different events, including “The Pool,” which mixed 10 rounds of swimming and muscle-ups; “The Row 1” and “The Row 2,” a 2,000-meter row and a 21,097-meter row, respectively; and the “Burden Run,” a 2.1-mile run that also featured 100 yards of “Flip the Pig,” a 600-yard log carry and the 66-yard “Drag the Iditarod.”

Other events included the obstacle-laden “Zigzag Sprint” for 50 yards; the “Legless” event that included a heaping of thrusters and legless rope climbs; the “Naughty Nancy,” which featured a mixture of running and overhead squats; the “Clean and Jerk” lifting competition; and the “2007” event that mixed rowing, pull-ups and push jerks.

Another Cookeville resident, Dan Bailey, brought in an impressive performance, finishing eighth in the men’s standings with 667 points.

His Sunday performance helped him move up the ranks, as he placed second in the “Sprint Chipper,” 10th in “The Cinco 1” and tied for seventh in “The Cinco 2.”

The CrossFit Games were challenging as ever, with Froning describing this year’s event as the most-difficult.

“This year’s just been rough, real rough,” he said.

Froning and Bailey weren’t the only Cookeville residents who took part in the Games. Matt Hewett competed as an individual, while the Team Mayhem group consisting of Lauren Neal, Jackie and Thomas Cox, Jennifer Hoffman, Darren Hunsucker and Ben Rogers competed in the team events.
