Schweitzer continues veto spree with 15 more

HELENA - Gov. Brian Schweitzer has vetoed a gun-rights bill that would allow concealed carry without a permit in Montana cities.

The veto came as the governor rejected another 15 bills Tuesday. He has now taken his red pen to more than 60 bills that came out of the Republican-led Legislature that adjourned last month.

Ardent gun advocates considered House Bill 271 the most important of their efforts this session.

But Schweitzer says it goes too far by letting people determine themselves if they are eligible to carry without a background check.

The Democratic governor also vetoed a Republican measure making it more difficult to sue for medical malpractice. Another vetoed bill would have made it harder for the state to move wild bison to a newly acquired wildlife management area.
