Wow that must be a dramatic place in the river. I would like to see what they are talking about. A tragedy!

Here is an illustration of a low head dam from the site www.overmywaders.com . What happens is the water flows over these small dams and down the slope of the dam. When the water hits the bottom it is forced up and back towards the dam where it is recycled back through the "roller". This action creates a situation where if you get into it, it just rolls you over and over keeping you trapped and rolling underwater.
