ISLAND PARK - An Island Park man was injured in an attack by a bear, believed to be a grizzly, near Last Chance on Saturday (Sept. 24) morning.

The Fremont County Sheriff's Office reports that Richard Paini sustained puncture wounds to his right forearm and left hand.

He was taken by Air Idaho Rescue to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. As of early afternoon Saturday he was said to be in stable condition awaiting surgery.

A Fremont County deputy responded to the bear attack that happened at about 8:45 a.m.

The attack happened about three quarters of a mile south of Last Chance on the east side of U.S. Highway 20.

Paini was hunting elk with John Stiehl, also of Island Park, when the two had a sudden encounter with the bear.

The bear then circled through the forested area and attacked Paini.

Stiehl was able to chase the bear off with the use of bear spray.

Idaho Fish and Game Department personnel also responded to the call. The Wildlife Human Attack Response Team was activated and the team will be investigating the attack to determine whether the bear is a further threat.

The Fremont County Sheriff's Office has responded to multiple sightings of bears in the Island Park area in the last month.

Hunters and others using the outdoors are advised to use caution in this area and where possible use bear-safe practices when in the back country.

The sheriff's office has provided the approximate GPS coordinates of the attack as 44.3527 / -111.4009
