Verona, VA - The Virginia Department of Game and Inland
Fisheries (VDGIF) is pleased to announce the promotion of Jay
Jeffreys, a wildlife professional with more than 26 years of
experience, to the position of Regional Wildlife Manager. The
position operates out of VDGIF's Verona regional office and oversees
wildlife management in an 11-county area that encompasses the
Alleghany and Blue Ridge Mountains from Frederick County south to
Rockbridge and Alleghany Counties. Within that region are Highland,
Goshen-Little North Mountain, and Gathright Wildlife Management
Areas, owned by the Department, as well the George Washington
National Forest. Jeffreys is filling the position vacated by Gary H.
Spiers who recently retired.
Jay Jeffreys is well-acquainted with the region, having been raised
in Staunton. He earned his undergraduate degree in biology from
Bridgewater College and his master's degree in wildlife management
from Tennessee Tech. Prior to joining VDGIF he worked for seven
years as a wildlife biologist with the West Virginia Division of
Natural Resources.
Jeffreys came to work at VDGIF in March 1987 as a biologist
assistant at the Clinch Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA). A
year later he was promoted to district wildlife biologist in the
Lynchburg area and has served in that capacity for more than 18
years. He earned the professional designation of certified wildlife
biologist from The Wildlife Society.
Over the years he has been at the forefront of several major
programs. He initiated and managed the first Quality Deer Management
program on VDGIF property at Fairystone WMA. He launched and led
urban deer management programs in the cities of Lynchburg, Roanoke
and Bedford. He has been actively involved in black bear management
in the Lynchburg/Roanoke region.
Above and beyond his wildlife duties, Jay Jeffreys has managed the
Department's program for the American Legion Boys State of Virginia
for 16 years, showcasing VDGIF's wildlife, fisheries and Law
enforcement work. He is an avid outdoorsman who has shared his
interest through numerous outlets. Jeffreys has been a long-time
contributor to the Department's Hunter Education and Outdoor
Education programs. He formalized the wildlife management course
taught at Hunter Education advanced training. He was involved early
on in the Department's outreach programs for women, including
developing the "Turkey Hunting and Ecology" course which remains a
staple offering in Outdoor Education workshops.
Involved in the Big Brothers organization, Jeffreys shared his love
of the outdoors by taking the youngster he was mentoring turkey
hunting. Other hobbies include woodworking and gardening. He and his
wife, Lloyd, will be moving from the Lynchburg area to Staunton. His
two daughters, Kathryn and Sarah are in college.
