December 2, 2004

Volunteers are being asked to aid authorities, friends and family members in the search for a hunter who has been missing in Green Swamp Wildlife Management Area (WMA) since the day before Thanksgiving. Charles Huff, 76 of Lakeland was reported missing by relatives on Thursday, Nov. 25, after he failed to return from a hunting trip. Huff’s 1994 Mazda pickup truck was found near the Polk-Sumter County line in Green Swamp WMA.

Those wishing to volunteer in the search are asked to meet Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers at the Polk County Sheriff’s Office mobile command post in Green Swamp WMA at 7 a.m. on Sat., Dec 4. The command post is located six miles east of the 471 entrance to Green Swamp WMA on Main Grade at the intersection of Tanic Grade.

Those with horses are encouraged to participate in the search. No ATVs will be allowed. Volunteers should wear boots and appropriate clothing for searching rough, swampy terrain. A walking stick for volunteers on foot is highly recommended. Those who wish to volunteer are directed to call the USA Speedway in Lakeland, toll free at 1-800-984-7223 for more information. Lunch will be provided to volunteers by local businesses.
